2016 Scholarship Winners!!

May 15, 2016

All our winners were very excited to be selected to receive a scholarship from Centra Foundation.  Some couldn’t believe that they were a winner of a $1,000 Loretta M. Burd scholarship.  All were very grateful for the honor.

High School Winners

Gabriella Galvan – Jennings County High School

Will pursue a nursing degree at IUPUI and aims to become a Pediatric Nurse Practiioner.  In her thank you letter Gabby told us:

Thank you for choosing me as one of the Loretta M. Burd Scholarship recipients. I am beyond grateful for your generosity, and I am extremely excited to begin my studies with your help this fall.

College has always been a dream of mine and is now becoming a wonderful reality.  However, I had not given much thought to the actual cost of college and its magnitude until I began filling out scholarship applications such as this one my senior year. The cost of college is very much real, and is something I plan to meet head on with smart and wise financial decisions. I can confidently say that applying for this scholarship was most definitely a wise decision.

I cannot thank you enough for your support, and I will make it a personal goal of mine to continue making smart financial choices as a Centra Credit Union member. Thank you once again for not only supporting my education but believing in me as well.

Brooklin Grantz – Our Lady of Providence High School

Plans to attend Indiana University Southeast and major in English

Marlena Reisinger - Columbus North High School

It means so much to me to have been chosen as a recipient of the Loretta M. Burd Scholarship. It eases the financial burden of my freshman year. Ella Rohlfs – Columbus East High School

Loretta M. Burd Scholarships Adult Winners

It’s never too late to earn a college degree! Both our adult winners decided to return to college to pursue a more meaning career and to ensure their financial stability during retirement.

Sylvia Scott  -- Jeffersonville

Sylvia works full time at the U.S. Army Dental Activity in Fort Knox and takes on line classes to earn a Business degree.   She shared, “I am not your typical adult returning to college.  I am older than many of my peers and faced with the prospect of having to live on a fixed income sooner than many of my co-workers and classmates.  By earning my degree I will be able to stay in the workforce longer and improve my finances when I retire.”

Lori Ferguson – Shelbyville

Lori is finishing her prerequisites and will study nursing at Ivy Tech Community College in Columbus.  It has been a dream of hers for many years to attend college.  She shared, “I would like to personally thank all involved with this generous scholarship. I was absolutely ecstatic and overwhelmed with emotion when I received the phone call about this scholarship. It will definitely help with my continued education.

Congratulations to our scholarship winners and thank you to Centra members who have made donations to Centra Foundation and helped make these awards possible.
