Our congratulations to Carolyn Keeney on graduating with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing from Ivy Tech Community College. A Loretta M. Burd Scholarship helped support her academic journey. Carolyn faced far greater challenges than most single mothers who decide to go back to school to better support their family. Her son Dan has a rare genetic disorder that requires weekly medical treatments and regular surgeries.
Carolyn shared, “Thanks to Centra Foundation, I was able to attain these things without worry about where the money would come from. I am so grateful for being given the opportunity to shine, and improve myself so I can be a better provider for my family." We are delighted to have helped Carolyn achieve her goals and offer her and Dan best wishes for their future.
When Carolyn received her scholarship she wrote, "For a single mom on a tight budget, the list of mandatory items to purchase was long and intimidating. There are so many expenses in addition to books and fees during that first semester that add up fast and can be very overwhelming and even hindering to starting the program. Thanks to Centra Foundation, I was able to attain these things without worry about where the money would come from. I am so grateful for being given the opportunity to shine, and improve myself so I can be a better provider for my family."
Life continues to be a challenge but Carolyn’s positive outlook and determination are key to her success. She is working third shift, studying for a bachelor’s degree and caring for Dan. She shared, “It is challenging, but I love every minute of it and would not have it any other way. Dan was actually the best training I have had for night shift. He hasn't slept through the night in a long time, so I am used to being up all night with him anyway. Then I get to sleep while he is at school and still spend a few hours with him after he gets home before I need to leave for work again. Thanks to Pell Grants and scholarships I was able to start my career without a single student loan! The amount of stress that takes off my shoulders cannot be measured by a monetary value!!”
